How Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Air Travel in Europe?

Due to the pandemic spread of the Coronavirus (early 2020 - spring 2022), many economic sectors suffered losses. This was due to the extensive contact restrictions necessary to contain the pandemic.

One industry that suffered serious losses was the aviation industry, as travel restrictions between countries to combat the international spread of the Coronavirus, were implemented.

This visualization is intended to show the evolution of air travel during the pandemic phases of the Coronavirus. The countries of the European Economic Area (27 EU countries + Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland are considered.

The individual sections of the ring to be seen represent the countries. These are the countries of the European Economic Area (27 EU states + Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland. The width of the countries depends on the number of flights of the country.

The connections between countries represent flight connections. The width of a connection represents the number of flights on that flight connection compared to other flight connections.

Connections that do not leave a country represent domestic flights.

The bars represent the level of COVID-19 incidence for the respective country below.

The time of visualization can now be selected via the timeline by hovering with the mouse pointer. In addition, important events during the pandemic and the total number of flights are displayed in the timeline.
